February 2010

Our first meeting for the year!!  Time to catch up again on everything under the sun.   Je, Fi and De didn't make it this evening.
Here are comments on the books that we read during the holls:

Ant:  -New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn (Twilight series)  - Brangelina: The Untold Story of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie by Ian Halperin (a tale of Angelina and her media prowess. Brad gets a mention somewhere in there)   - The Last Lecture by Randy Pauch (a dying man's message to his children however this book has something special for all of us - recommended)   -We are All Made of Glue by Marina Lewyca (listened to an audio book and the narrator is fantastic .... loved it!)  Ant is currently half way through -Bill Brysons Notes from a Small Country ( good! very good!!)

An  - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy (good!)    - The Story of Edgar Sawtelle (recommended)

Sa  - The Almond Picker by Simonetta Hornby   - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Marianne Shaffer and Annie Barrows .....go to this link for it's website. An and Ca have also read this book ..... (a light read ... giving an insight into what happened to Guernsey during WW2 which was very interesting.)

Fra - Dreams from My Father by Barack Obama ( very good ..... ) We can also recommend the audio book which is read by Barack Obama himself.

He  - The Diary of Adrian Mole by Sue Townsend and more .... will be back with more after checking :)

Ca - Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland (a book about a Vermeer passing through different hands over the years written in short story form, each story representing a period in the life of the painting ending with it's creation ..... good .... now looking for more to read by this author .... )..... -Wanting by Richard Flannagan (set in early settlement Australia, ...loved it.. ), Rosewater and Soda Bread by Marsha Mehran (nice and light with lots of Iranian food and gossip), The Philosophers Doll by Amanda Lohrey (irritating selfish characters but extremely well written by an Australian author .... you won't like it but it is well worth the read ) and Third Heaven Conspiracy (set in Florence ....  a historical mystery involving Dante ... didn't like the plot .... only the historical parts ....) Ca (thanks to Ant) also listened to Randy Pauch's Last Lecture on CD .... touching .... and has googled him to see what has happened to his family since he passed away.  The lecture can be viewed on youtube.
