Wednesday, 2nd Feb, 2011 - First Meeting of the Year!!

The start of a new year and great to see everyone again. We welcome new member Cat who joins us for the first time today! (Also missed Je who could not make it this month.) Our first meeting of the year was mainly to catch up on each other and also find out what everyone had read over the holls ...(We do not have a set book to read over the holls so everyone just reads whatever they feel like reading.)

Some of us read the third book of the Millenium series ... The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest.  Ant wanted to know which one was our favourite of the three.  Well we all had different answers while some of us didn't have any favourites at all.

We talked about many books ....  An read Shantaram by David Gregory Roberts (Biography) over 900 pages but fascinating ....  Fra read and recommended Hitch-22 by Christopher Hitchens (Biography) ..... Ant read Where Rainbows End by Cecelia Ahern , Wishful Drinking, by Carrie Fisher, and Corduroy Mansions by Alexander McCall-Smith. Su enjoyed  A Man's Got to Have a Hobby by William McGuinness(Biography), while Ca mentioned Life Studies by Susan Vreeland (A series of short stories around paintings!), The Bastard of Istanbul by Elif Shafak (set in Turkey and the US), The Lost Symbol (thriller), A True History of the Hula Hoop by Judith Lanigan (Biography) ... De read and said that she thoroughly enjoyed The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas...which immediately brought out mixed reactions from those of us in the group who read it. De also enjoyed  The Happiest Refugee by Anh Do (Biography)

We talked about some audio books that we enjoyed.  The three books from a series by Alexander McCall-Smith ... Portuguese Irregular Verbs, The Finer Points of Sausage Dogs and At the Villa of Reduced Circumstances, read by Hugh Laurie is so funny and Hugh Laurie is excellent as he reads it in different voices using various accents.  We are All Made of Glue, by Marina Lewycka read by Sian Thomas is another one. She also reads A History of Tractors in the Ukrainian and Two Caravans (also called Strawberry Fields) .... Listening to the audio book gives one a totally different experience to reading it.  And we also talked about Barack Obama and  how well he read's his biography, Dreams From My Father....    Also The Last Lecture by Randy Pauch.

These books in Audio format read by Hugh Laurie are excellent!

It was a warm evening as we are in the middle of Summer and the weather has been very hot over here over the past few days.  We ended the evening with Tea and cake, looking through De's lovely photos ..... We were also thinking of Queensland on the other side of Australia which was about to face Cyclone Yasi sometime tonight .... Queensland having already experienced so much flooding this year; De had only just been over there this January in the middle of the flooding .....  Just before Ant left, we turned on the news .....

The next meeting is at De's place and we will be discussing Mr Pip by Lloyd Jones (chosen by Ca). Looking forward to reading it ........
