The Secret River (Festival of Perth)

The Secret River, performed by The Sydney Theatre Company is based on Kate Grenville's book of the same name. The book is set in the 19th Century and it is a historical story about the Convict William Thornhill who is transported to Australia for stealing wood.  The book gives us a glimpse into the past and also the confronting clash of culture that occurs between the early settlers and the original native people of Australia.

The Secret River was written as a result of Kate Grenville's desire to find out more about her ancestor, Solomon Wiseman.  More information on the book can be found on Kate Grenville's website.  She has also written a book called "Searching for the Secret River" which is a fascinating read about her journey with writing the book.

The play was adapted for stage by Andrew Bovell and directed by Neil Armfield  .... playing at at His Majesty's Theatre in Perth.  It was excellent.  It brought the book to life.  The set was just wonderful and the acting superb.  We were lucky to get tickets as the whole season sold out!
