- A retelling of the biblical story of Gomer and Hosea (Book of Hosea), but set in the time of the Californian Gold Rush (1850's)
- Theme - the love of God redeems us no matter how sinful we are.
- First edition was published in 1991 has no Christian content and is now out of print - we could not get hold of a 1st edition - it would have been interesting to compare the differences. We have read the 1997 version.
- Research tells us that Francine Rivers had written historical romances long before she became a Christian in 1986. Rivers later made additions to the book and it was released again in 1997, with clear Christian content.
- It has since then been very well received with over a million copies sold in 2009. There is a huge following of readers who love this book. Also a lot of fan based video trailers for the book on youtube.
- This is the groups first taste of Christian literature.
- There were mixed reactions to the characters and to this book.
