Now, thanks to this book, noted Fra we now know what MD on  favourite chutney jar stands for.  It's "Marketing Department Government Guaranteed", as Cassie finds out in Chapter 2.

A plaster cast of Chopin's "left hand, brilliantly white on the red lining of the cabinet, lay next to a cast of Sand's right arm and hand" from Ch 3  Pippa has never heard of George Sand. Celeste tells her that Chopin and Sand explored the countryside on a donkey.  Love these little bits of information that flow through the novel.
